Den 6 - Pavučiny

Běžnými cestami to do Státub trvá týden. Po Stezce jenom dva dny.

Z Bílé pevnosti vyráželi za svítání. Asi po hodině cesty je Myrya zastavila a nasměrovala je na zdánlivě náhodnou mezeru mezi stromy.

„Nezapomeňte,“ připomněla jim, „držte se v řadě. Neztrácejte z dohledu toho, kdo jde před vámi. Nemluvte, nekřičte, nebroukejte si,“ – po téhle poznámce Johanna protočila oči – „když budete nutně potřebovat něco říct, zašeptejte to. Pokud někoho potkáme, buďte zdvořilí, ale příliš se s nimi nebavte.“ Nikdo se neodvážil jí odporovat. Vykročili mimo hlavní cestu, první Myrya, za ní Elentaya, Karlimdor jako třetí, pak Johanna, za ní Amanda a průvod uzavírala Mei.

První změna, které si Elentaya všimla, byl hmyz. Nebo spíš jeho absence. Posledních pár dní se vzduch jen tetelil mouchami, motýly a komáry. Teď však ať napínala své špičaté uši, jak chtěla, dříve všudypřítomné bzučení bylo pryč. Když se nad tím zamyslela, obvyklé zvuky lesa také zněly jinak. Jako by jejich malou skupinku někdo obalil vlnou a zadusil všechny zvuky okolního světa. Čím déle pokračovali sotva viditelnou pěšinkou mezi stromy, tím byla vrstva tlustší a tlustší a ptačí zpěv tišší a tišší, až nakonec umlkl docela.

Podrostem se začala plížit mlha a kmeny stromů z ní čněly jako výhružné prsty. Brzy se v ní ztratily zcela. Když Elentaya nahlédla Myrye přes rameno, viděla pouze bílo. Pěšina, kterou následovali, se z lesní půdy proměnila v holou skálu, ale i ona se zakrátko utopila v mlze. Jako by vše mimo ně přestalo existovat.

Ticho na nich leželo jako těžká deka. Elentaya by začala pochybovat, zda náhodou nepřišla o sluch, kdyby nebylo jejího vlastního přerývaného dechu. Chvílemi jako by se k němu přidávaly další zvuky, příliš vzdálené, než aby je rozpoznala, snad hukot větru, snad šumění příboje, snad hlas nějakého prastarého tvora. Když se ohlédla na Karlimdora, jeho zmatený pohled jí říkal, že je slyší také.

Snad šli několik hodin, snad několik let, ale náhle se z mlhy vynořila skalní stěna. Myrya je vedla podél ní až k ústí jeskyně a poté dovnitř. Tam konečně prolomila ticho. ��Tady přenocujeme,“ řekla a sundala ze zad otep dříví.

„Je bezpečný tady rozdělávat oheň?“ zeptala se Johanna, „A mluvit už taky smíme?“

„Dokud nebudeme příliš hlasití, je to v pořádku. A oheň se postará o to, aby naše útočiště zůstalo bezpečné.“

„Takže čistě teoreticky,“ začala Johanna chystat hraničku, „bychom si na zítra mohli přichystat pochodně a to by nás chránilo na cestě? A třeba bychom si i mohli povídat?“

„To tě to mlčení tak moc zmohlo?“ protáhl si Karlimdor záda.

Johanna dramaticky vzdechla. „Nemáš ponětí, jak strašně jsem se nudila! Můj umělecký duch zmírá v nečinnosti.“ Vsunula do hraničky svou dlaň a nechala z ní vyšlehnout plameny. Dřevo zapraskalo.

„Nemluvě o tom, jak my jsme museli trpět bez tvého génia,“ přidala se Amanda k melodramatické scéně, „co to bude dneska, mistře? Hospodské odrhovačky, nebo epická píseň, ze které si pamatuješ jenom polovinu slok?“

V podobném duchu pokračovala debata po zbytek večera. Když přišel čas ulehnout, Elentaya s Myryou si vylosovaly první hlídku.

Chvíli seděly mlčky, ale zvědavost nakonec Elentayu přemohla. „Co je vlastně tohle za místo?“

Myrya se napila z čutory. „Pro začátek je to jeden z důvodů, proč se Beltanu ještě nepodařilo pořádně zmapovat. Jinak pořádně nevím. Ptala jsem se starších hraničářů a každý mi dal úplně jinou odpověď.“

„A co si myslíš ty?“ naléhala dál.

Myrya se zamyslela. „Podle mě to není tak úplně místo. Takový… prostor mezi místy. Je to jako… víš, jak se říká, že je někdo ‚na cestách‘? Víš, že je někde pryč, ale jinak nevíš nic. A tohle je podle mě podobné… jsme prostě na cestě. A máme štěstí, že tahle trasa je kratší, než kdybychom šli po obyčejných cestách.“

„Jak jsi v té mlze vůbec našla cestu? Vždyť nebylo vidět na krok.“

„Neumím to vysvětlit… nějaký šestý smysl?“

„Pavučina…“ řekla Elentaya zamyšleně. Myrya se na ni překvapeně podívala.

„Když se do pavučiny chytne moucha,“ vysvětlovala Elentaya, „pavouk vnímá, jak se pavučina chvěje, a ví, kde ta moucha je, i když na ni nevidí. A… a tyhle stezky jsou jako pavučina, která je natažená mezi větvičkami, ale nevidíš ji, dokud na ni správně nezasvítí slunce.“

„Pavučina… to se mi líbí,“ usmála se Myrya, „teď jen musíme doufat, že si nepřetrhneme vlákno, po kterém jdeme.“

„To už se taky stalo?“ vykulila Elentaya oči.

„Když si nedáš pozor… nechodím tudy ráda, hory jsou dost nebezpečné i bez toho, abychom se pouštěli mimo obyčejné cesty. Ale zatím děláme všechno správně, tak snad nám to vydrží i zítra.“

Zbytek jejich hlídky uběhl v tichu. Když je vystřídaly Amanda a Mei, uložila se Elentaya poblíž vchodu a poslouchala, zda se z mlhy neozve volání ztracených poutníků.
